To the editor:

PDR is about sustainability

March 16, 2007

Regarding all the opposition to the PDR (purchase of development rights) program, our national figure of 2 acres a minute being destroyed is very accurate.

Last year, in the state of Wisconsin, 30,000 acres were destroyed by development. That is a 60 percent increase in one decade.

At this rate, we will be sitting ducks for the Taliban and other terrorist groups.

Can’t you see that our ability to feed ourselves is diminishing? The government is spending millions plus a year to keep our food supplies that we badly need safe.

The Department of Agriculture is looking for 10 million more acres to plant corn for the production of ethanol thus reducing the amount of oil desperately needed by us from being imported. Meanwhile we keep destroying farmland.

It is almost like a big dog chasing his tail and never being able to catch it. Instead of working together, we are working against one another.

The opposition to the PDR program says it is wrong for taxpayers’ money to be spent this way. This is a form of homeland security folks, and PDR stands shoulder to shoulder with our security.

I recently found out that I am ineligible to participate in the program due to my property locations. There are no sour grapes here because of this, and I can only hope that there would be changes in the future to allow me to participate.

I care for the freedom and democracy for future generations and without adequate food supply, these will be lost.
