To the editor:

PDR is in the public interest

March 13, 2007

We believe that it is in the public interest, and for the security of generations to come, to preserve farmland.

The PDR program is the best idea to come about since family farmers have gradually been squeezed out of existence for more than a half century now. It serves as a way for a farmer who wants to have a productive farm continue into the next generation, the chance to retire, knowing that someone will carry on.

It behooves each of us to look at the broader picture. John Torinus has done an excellent job of explaining the positive elements of the program by way of the Daily News.

My husband and I have placed into perpetuity part of our farm, an isolated natural woodlot and farmland. It is our contribution to future generations, and a legacy to the descendants of the first settlers.
