Sample Letters

Check out these sample letters for inspiration, but we do recommend you write about your own beliefs and experiences, in your own words. Personalized letters have more impact than "form" letters, and much higher likelihood of getting published.

Sample #1

Washington County's open spaces-the woodlands, wetlands, parks, and farmlands for which our county is known-are disappearing as we speak. Our county is one of the fastest growing counties in the state.  Developers and community planners need to know that we value these beautiful, natural settings. We want to preserve these special outdoor spaces so our grandchildren can enjoy the same kind of Washington County we enjoy today-instead of having to read about it in history books. Sincerely,
(Your name)
(Your organization, if pertinent)
(Your street address and city)
(Your phone number)

Sample #2

I urge all Washington County residents and their elected officials to remember the importance of striking a healthy balance between developed land and open space. The natural resources found in open spaces like farmland, wooded areas, and parks are critical to Washington County's  future.  In the first place, they provide places for us to "get away" and enjoy recreational activities like hiking, fishing, and skiing.  These resources also contribute to vital ecological processes that sustain our health.  Fiscally speaking, many industries in Washington County such as tourism and food production will be hurt if open spaces disappear.   Most important, open spaces contribute to our community identity.   It's too easy to focus on the short-term needs of the region.   We also must look to our future.  I encourage everyone to get involved in preserving our natural treasures.
Sincerely,
(Your name)
(Your organization, if pertinent)
(Your street address and city)
(Your phone number)
